A Thanksgiving Prayer

Father,
Forgive us of the sin of war
even when fighting seems a lesser evil
than allowing our enemies to prevail.

May we remember the suffering of our enemies
even as we rejoice in victories
and pray for families with empty chairs
at the table.

Thank you for the idea of America
dreamed by our forefathers
and dreamed anew
today.

Thank you
for your grace
that buys us back
when we miss the mark.

Deliver us
from arrogance.
as we remember
love is shaped like a cross.
